Speaking Engagements

My latest presentation, Common Mistakes Writers Make During the Editing Process, is geared toward writers who would like to improve their understanding of editing and develop their editing process. The presentation length is adjustable, but it's typically 60-75 minutes.

The presentation covers three main areas:

  • Types of Editing

  • Self-Editing

  • Working with an Editor

I'll explain the similarities and differences between developmental editing, line editing, copyediting, and proofreading. I'll also talk about when each type of editing should be used.

I'll discuss the importance of self-editing, how it saves a writer time and money later, and the common mistakes writers make when self-editing.

Finally, I'll describe how to find the right editor, what to expect when working with an editor, and how to best use an editor's feedback. In this last section, I'll also talk about what prep work a writer should complete before working with an editor.
